From May 2025, the Butler lab will be recruiting two PhD students (to start between May and September 2025) and two postdoctoral fellows (to start within a year from May 2025). The positions are in a new area of research in the lab – to isolate and characterise new yeasts from Ireland with potential biotechnological applications, and to design cloning and knockout systems for biotech yeasts. The projects will also have evolutionary angles, including characterising the evolution of centromeres across the budding yeasts.

Expressions of interest are welcome from those with molecular and microbiological backgrounds and/or interests in bioinformatics and evolution. The postdoctoral positions will be formally advertised later.

The stipend for the PhD students is €25,000 per annum (tax free), plus fees at EU levels. Fees for non-EU students are not covered.

The salary for the postdoctoral positions starts at €45,847 per annum (straight from PhD). A higher salary may be possible for a candidate with postdoctoral experience in bioinformatics, particularly with yeast or fungal genomes.
